After working as a lecturer in human and urban geography at the Urban and Social Geography Working Group of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geographie.uni-koeln.de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Geography<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uni-koeln.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Cologne<\/a> (Germany) he joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sasi.group.shef.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social and Spatial Inequalities Research Group<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Sheffield<\/a> (UK) He completed his PhD as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmapper.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Worldmapper project<\/a> with research on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viewsoftheworld.net\/?p=1925\">visualising the social dimensions of our planet<\/a>. He then worked at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/geography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Geography<\/a> at the University of Sheffield until 2013 when he joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geog.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Geography and the Environment<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Oxford<\/a>. In September 2016 he joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/hi.is\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Iceland<\/a> where as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hi.is\/staff\/ben\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor of Geography<\/a> at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences in the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences he continues to investigate social and spatial inequalities, humanity&#8217;s impact on Earth, global sustainability and the development of concepts for analysing, visualising and mapping these issues. It builds on the objectives of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trustforlondon.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trust for London<\/a>, which aims to tackle poverty and inequality in the British capital.\n\n\n\n<h2>About my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viewsoftheworld.net\/?p=1925\">PhD research<\/a> (2008-2011): Worldmapping beyond mere description<\/h2>\n\n\n<em>Funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leverhulme.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leverhulme Trust<\/a><\/em>\n\nThe research was built on the work of the Worldmapper project. Worldmapper visually describes the world, mapping the contours of hundreds of variables; but only in one way and a way easily open to criticism despite its novelty and wide scope. The PhD addressed these potential criticisms by moving the resource beyond its current simple descriptive form. It included a reflection of more theoretical issues on how world resources, flows and shares are understood, particularly visually understood \u2013 and how we can improve on this (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.viewsoftheworld.net\/?p=1925\">find out more about my PhD thesis here<\/a>) The majority of maps presented on this website are outcomes or leftovers from the PhD. They are also called cartograms, otherwise known as density-equalising maps. The basics for the algorithm used are those described by Michael Gastner and Mark Newman:\nMichael T. Gastner and M. E. J.
