As all around Europe, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/topical-events\/first-world-war-centenary\" target=\"_blank\">British government<\/a> made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1914.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">extensive plans<\/a> to commemorate this accordingly (Prime Minister David Cameron&#8217;s words of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/speech-at-imperial-war-museum-on-first-world-war-centenary-plans\" target=\"_blank\">the commemoration saying something about the British people like the Diamond Jubilee celebration<\/a> were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-24440923\" target=\"_blank\">commented critically<\/a>, while meanwhile commercial advertisers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NWF2JBb1bvM\" target=\"_blank\">have discovered the emotional power of World War I<\/a>). So-called Remembrance Day in November saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/poppies.hrp.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">display of a poppy field at the Tower of London<\/a> as a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remembrance_poppy\" target=\"_blank\">commemoration of soldiers<\/a> who died in war, a symbol which was introduced following the aftermath of World War I in 1921. But while today&#8217;s times are often referred to as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post-war\" target=\"_blank\">post-war era<\/a> since the end of World War II, wars keep being fought, and soldiers from countries such as the United Kingdom keep dying in conflicts around the world. Last months the <a href=\"http:\/\/i100.independent.co.uk\/article\/map-all-the-british-soldiers-who-have-been-lost-in-conflict-since-1945--gy5VEbnIve\" target=\"_blank\">Independent Newspaper<\/a> published figures from the UK Ministry of Defence (which I spotted on <a href=\"http:\/\/geographyteacher2point0.blogspot.de\/2014\/11\/conflict.html\" target=\"_blank\">one of Alan Parkinson&#8217;s blogs<\/a>) listing all 7,145 British military deaths since World War Two (including a count of deaths in Northern Ireland).
